Board extends superintendent’s contract, but details still unknown
Two weeks after the Georgetown County School Board agreed to extend its contract with Superintendent Bethany Giles, the contract and the board’s evaluation have not been made public.
The board voted Nov. 4 to extend Giles’ contract through June 20, 2029. The decision was made after the board reviewed her report on the district’s progress summary and board member comments on her performance.
Giles became interim superintendent in July 2024 after Superintendent Keith Price left to become head of Lexington District I. She was made superintendent in September after the district conducted a search for a replacement.
She was hired at a starting salary of $190,000 under a contract that was scheduled to run through June 30, 2028.
Giles received an overall excellent rating for the 2024-25 school year, the board announced before voting to extend her contract.
District officials said this week that the district’s attorney is working on the contract and evaluation which need to be reviewed before they can be made public.
The board’s 8-0 vote followed a two-hour executive session. Board Member Scott DuBose was absent.
“We certainly are excited about the direction you’re taking the district,” Chairman Keith Moore told Giles after the vote. “I look forward to continuing to support you.”
Giles said the rating, along with her extension, meant a lot to her as a product of the Georgetown County schools. Giles grew up in Andrews. She earned a softball scholarship to S.C. State University. She worked as a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent in the county district.
“It’s still so humbling to know that the district that raised me has poured into me, and now I have the opportunity to lead and continue that legacy,” she said. “I’m excited and ready to keep going.”
