April 2, 2020

Emory Olin Adams III of Pawleys Island died March 25 due to complications from an infection. He was 77.

He was born Oct. 25, 1942, in Kingstree, the son of Emory Adams Jr. and Mae Bradham Adams.

He grew up in Georgetown and graduated from Winyah High School before joining the Army in 1960. He served in the 101st Airborne Division, participating in the Cuban missile crisis and the integration of universities in Mississippi and Tennessee.

After the Army, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he met his wife.

After several years, they settled in Edison, N.J., where they raised their sons.  He worked for several companies including Safety-Kleen, Engelhard and BASF, before retiring in 2008.

Mr. Adams coached Little League baseball for the  North Edison Baseball and Softball League and was also the league’s treasurer for several years.

His biggest joy was spending time with his family. Throughout his life he enjoyed the beach and the marsh at Pawleys Island, especially wildlife watching.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Janis Anderson Adams; his sons, Emory Adams IV and Andrew Adams; a grandson, Andrew Adams Jr; his sister, Madeline Drake; and other friends and family.

A private memorial service was held Monday at Mayer Funeral Home. There is a guest book at mayerfuneralhome.com.
