James C. Phillips, 74, founder of sign company

James Curtis Phillips of Pawleys Island, who founded the Island Sign Co. with his late wife, died Feb. 15 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. He was 74.

He was born Nov. 14, 1945, the son of  Curtis and Mildred Phillips. He served in the Navy.

Mr. Phillips and his wife, Donna, co-founded the Island Sign Co. of Pawleys Island in 1980. 

It is now owned and operated by their daughter, Tina.

He is survived by his children, Tina Phillips Wise, Juli Phillips Gault, James “Jay” Phillips Jr. (Jessica) and Amy Phillips Avery; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; his brother, Robert Lee King; and brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Brana Arnold.

Private services will be held at a later date.
