WHS assistant picked to take over as principal

Hunter Eddy helps a senior with his tie before graduation last year.

The school board hired a member of the Waccamaw High School family as its next leader this week.

Hunter Eddy, who has been an assistant principal at the school since 2018, will take over as principal on July 1, the first day of the 2024-25 school year.

“I’m very excited,” Eddy said. “It’s not about me though. It’s about the students at Waccamaw High School and the wonderful teachers we have and the community there, which I think is outstanding.”

Eddy will take over from David Hammel, who was named interim principal last summer.

“My job is to help us continue to grow and move in the right direction,” Eddy said.

Along with being an assistant principal, Eddy was also director of the Warrior Virtual Online Academy when the district started online classes in the 2016-17 school year. At the time he was a social studies teacher.

Eddy taught at Carvers Bay high before transferring to Waccamaw.

Last June Eddy was named acting principal when Adam George was relieved of his duties after a senior prank went awry in May. Eddy remained in charge until Hammel was appointed principal in July.

“One of the things I talked about in the interview process was stability,” Eddy said. “I think stability after the last couple of years we’ve had at Waccamaw is very key to kind of calming down the teachers, the students and the community.”

The other finalists for the position were Ginny Haynes, principal at Waccamaw Middle School, and Nicole Tucker-Young, assistant principal at Star Academy in Lillington, N.C.
