Sue B. Varn, 82, nurse at Tidelands Hospice
January 23, 2025
Sue Bentley Varn of Pawleys Island died Jan. 19 at Inlet Coastal Resort. She was 82.
She was born Sept. 2, 1942, in Philadelphia, the daughter of Robert Logan Bentley and Edith Hoffman Bentley. She graduated from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va., and attended the University of Virginia School of Nursing. It was in Williamsburg where she met her husband of 59 years, Dr. George Holland Varn.
The couple moved to Georgetown in 1970. Mrs. Varn worked as a hospice nurse with Tideland Community Hospice for over 15 years and volunteered for several years thereafter. She also volunteered as a Sunday school teacher at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Varn was remembered as talented gardener who always had fresh vegetables spread across the kitchen counters and was always willing to share with visitors. Her tomatoes were unrivaled most years in taste and quantity. She was also an excellent cook. She enjoyed cross-stitching and sailing North Inlet, Winyah Bay and the local rivers with her family.
She enjoyed travel. Williamsburg was one of her favorite places, and she loved anything involving the colonial period.
She is survived by her children, Mark H. Varn (Amanda) of Mount Pleasant, Eric B. Varn (Kate) of Pawleys Island and Sharon V. Groat (Geoff) of Charleston; and her grandchildren, Scott Varn, K. Logan Varn, William Varn, Katherine Varn, Eliza Groat and Suzanne Groat.
Her husband died before her.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Downtown Chapel of Mayer-Ethridge Funeral Home. A graveside service for the family will be held Saturday at Union Methodist Church by the Rev. Furman Buchanan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Duncan Methodist Church, Union Methodist Church or Tidelands Community Hospice.
