Dr. E. Benton DuBose, 84, started free dental clinic

February 20, 2025

Dr. Edward Benton DuBose of Debordieu died Feb. 12 with his wife of 60 years by his side. He was 84.

Known as Benny, he was born May 28, 1940, in Columbia, the third of five children of Carl Butler and Minnie Reynolds DuBose. After graduating from Dreher High School in 1958, he served as a corpsman in the Navy stationed in Pensacola, Fla.

He returned to Columbia where he graduated from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in business management. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. It was at USC that he met and married another graduate, Lynn Fishburne.

In 1966, he was accepted into the School of Dentistry at the University of Louisville where he earned the degree of doctor of dental medicine with honors.

Dr. DuBose established himself as a leader in the Class of 1970. He was a mentor to many classmates. At the same time, his sense of humor gave welcome relief and diversion from the stress and rigor of dental school.

Upon graduation, he entered practice in Newberry, where he spent 27 years. In 1997, he relocated to Pawleys Island, where he had owned a second home for many years, and opened a dental practice. He was able to enjoy many activities that he loved, including fishing, golf and tennis.

For many years, Dr. DuBose felt there was a need for a free dental clinic in Georgetown County. In 2013, Helping Hands of Georgetown agreed to sponsor and help fund the clinic, which was recently named in his honor.

He was also known as “the dentist’s dentist” for treating many of his fellow dentists and their families during his 47 years of practice.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Steven Martin DuBose of Fort Worth, Texas, and Brett Benton DuBose (Jennifer) of Greenwood;  his grandchildren, Mary Clare and Alice of Forth Worth and Ellie and Jenna of Greenwood; his brothers Carl (Mary Anne) and Francis (Judy), both of Columbia, and David (Jennie) of Newberry; and many nieces and nephews.

His sister, Patricia DuBose Logothetis, died before him.

A memorial service was held Monday at The Abbey.

Memorials may be made to the Dr. Edward Benton DuBose Dental Clinic at Helping Hands, 1813 Highmarket St., Georgetown, SC 29440 (helpinghandsofgeorgetown.org)  or The Abbey of Pawleys Island, 46 Gathering Lane, Pawleys Island, SC 29585 (theabbeypawleysisland.com).
