Former principal back again for another year as interim
David Hammel was named interim principal of Waccamaw High two days before the start of the school year, replacing Hunter Eddy who stepped down after a year due to health reasons, according to Georgetown County School District officials.
Hammel served as principal from 2008 to 2018 before moving to the district office and then to the classroom at Georgetown High. He returned to Waccamaw High as interim principal in 2023 when Adam George was removed as principal following a senior prank that involved students entering and vandalizing the school overnight.
After Eddy, assistant principal at WHS since 2018, was named principal last July, Hammel became executive director of the nonprofit Teach My People after-school program. He left that position this summer to return to Waccamaw High as a teacher.
“We’re confident because we have someone who’s been in that position who’s helped us transition before and has led our school, our Warrior family,” Superintendent Bethany Giles said. “We’re looking forward to a successful transition.”
Neither Hammel nor Eddy could be reached for comment on Wednesday.
The school board unanimously voted to approve Eddy’s resignation and his replacement effective Sept. 2 during a special meeting Wednesday morning.
Board Member Patti Hammel abstained in the vote due to a personal conflict of interest, since Hammel is her son.
