Bill Snyder, 76, former W.Va. official started office store

Charles William Snyder Jr. of Hagley Estates died June 6 at McLeod Medical Center in Florence. He was 76.

Known as Bill, he was born July 9, 1948, the son of Florence Snyder Hincy and Charles William Snyder. He was raised in Waynesburg, Pa., and graduated from Miami Edison High School in Florida in 1966. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration from West Virginia University.

Mr. Snyder then began work for the state of West Virginia in Charleston. He worked his way up to the position of deputy commissioner of Finance and Administration under governors Arch Moore and Jay Rockefeller. One of the highlights of his career in state government was working with Gov. Rockefeller’s wife, Sharon, on the renovation of the historic Holly Grove Mansion at the state capitol complex. 

Mr. Snyder and his wife, Pam, then moved to Myrtle Beach, where he managed the Continental Motor Inn for seven years. He then opened Pawleys Office Supply, catering to the office needs of the Pawleys Island area. His final job was as property manager for KA Diehl Co.

He was a former member of Pawleys Island Rotary, Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church, the Hagley HeMen Society and Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Chad Snyder (Marion) and Elizabeth Snyder Pitcher (Larson); his siblings, Michael Snyder (Terri) and Carolyn Snyder Lemmon (Bill); his grandchildren, Will, Graham, Rockne, Beckett and Knox; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service was held Tuesday at Holy Cross Faith Memorial. Burial will be at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Fairmont, W.Va.
