Dr. Edward Blackhurst, 87, college professor

Dr. A. Edward Blackhurst of Litchfield Beach died July 23. He was 87.
He was born Oct. 2, 1937, the son of Joseph Wilson Blackhurst and Elizabeth Anderson Blackhurst of Sewickley, Pa. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Penn State, and master’s and doctorate in special education from the University of Pittsburgh. He served four years in the Pennsylvania Air National Guard and four years in the Air Force Reserve.
Dr. Blackhurst joined the faculty of the University of Kentucky in 1965. During his career, he authored many books and articles in professional journals. He was voted one of 10 people who had made the most contributions to professional organizations related to technology in special education.
He retired from UK in 1999 and moved to Pawleys Island the following year.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anita “Neats” Blackhurst; his daughter Ann Hamilton (Todd); his brother, Eric (Suzy); and his niece, Lindsey Blackhurst (Esha).
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the University of Kentucky, Office of Development, William B. Sturgill Development Building 0015, 450 Rose St., Lexington, KY 40506 and directed to the Blackhurst Student Research Fund, which the couple established to aid with graduate degree programs.
