Frances E.P. Burroughs, 80, made memories at Pawleys

Frances Elisabeth Pegues Burroughs of Conway died Oct. 19 with her children by her side after suffering a stroke. She was 80.
She was born Jan. 2, 1944, at her maternal grandparents’ home in McColl, the daughter of Victor René Pegues and Elisabeth Hamer Pegues. Fran spent her childhood at Spring Hill (Pegues Place) in upper Marlboro County.
After matriculating at public schools in Cheraw and Monroe, N.C., she graduated from high school and junior college at Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority.
She taught 10th grade English for one year in Florence before moving to Columbia and working with the Richland County Department of Public Welfare. She then moved to Bennettsville and worked for the Marlboro County DPW for several years before relocating to Conway where she was employed with the Social Security Administration.
In Conway, she was introduced to her future husband, Henry B. “Cuffy” Burroughs Jr. by his aunt. They married on Nov. 13, 1976, and were married for 32 years until Mr. Burroughs death in 2009.
Mrs. Burroughs supported her husband and children in endeavors ranging from family businesses to school activities. She was a member of the board at Waccamaw Academy. She and her family were founding members of Westminster Presbyterian Church ARP, where she assisted her husband as treasurer and kept the infant nursery during worship.
Additionally, Mrs. Burroughs was a member of the Ivy Garden Club, the Wednesday Morning Bridge Club, the Huguenot Society of South Carolina and St. David’s Society. She was also a founding member of the Kingston Junior League. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, genealogy, local history and was an avid reader.
She helped organize community theater productions, school plays, and later, elaborate pranks on fellow Junior League members.
She and her family created many fond memories at their beach cottage, “Windfall,” at Pawleys Island.
She is survived by her son, Henry Buck Burroughs III (Julie) of Brandon, Fla.; her daughter, Victoria McNeill Burroughs of North Charleston; her grandson, Henry Buck Burroughs IV of Brandon; her niece, Elisabeth Kinney McNiel (Danny) of Bennettsville; her great-nephews and niece, Robert Leland McNiel III (Emma) of Chattanooga, Margaret Jane McNiel of Pawleys Island and William Light Kinney McNiel of Bennettsville; and great-great nephew and niece, Robert Leland McNiel IV and Rose Catherine McNiel of Chattanooga; and numerous cousins.
Her sister, Margaret Pegues Kinney, and her brother-in-law, William Light Kinney Jr., died before her as did a nephew, William Light Kinney III.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Lakeside Cemetery by the Rev. Peter Foxx. The family will receive friends at the cemetery after the service.
