Hugh Patrick, 91, co-founder of textile chemical company

Charles Hugh Patrick Jr. of Pawleys Island died March 8 at his home. He was 91.
Known as Hugh, he was born Feb. 3, 1934, in Greenville, the son of the Charles Hugh Patrick of Varnville and Mildred Wysong Patrick of Greenville. He graduated from Greenville High School, where he played football, and earned a degree from Clemson University in industrial management with a minor in textile chemistry. At that time, Clemson was a military school which helped graduates prepare for the service and life in general.
Mr. Patrick spent his career in the textile dyeing and printing industry working for Burlington Industries and Milliken Company prior to joining C.H. Patrick & Co.. In 1971, he and his brother, Phil, formed Pat-Chem Inc. to manufacture textile chemicals.
After retiring in 1993, Mr. Patrick moved to Pawleys Island, drawn by his love for boating, fishing and golf. He and Mack Finley formed H & M Marine Products for the sale of marine maintenance products. He was always pursuing new endeavors.
Mr. Patrick served as president of the American Association of Textile Chemists & Colorists, the Greenville YMCA and the Greenville Country Club.
He was a devoted member of All Saints Church, where he served on the vestry, attended men’s Bible studies and served as an acolyte for a number of years.
He was remembered as a leader blessed with integrity, wisdom, judgment and love who always took care of his family, employees and many friends.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Sue Taylor Patrick; his brother, Philip Stone Patrick; his sons, Charles Hugh Patrick III and Andrew McFall Patrick; his stepchildren, Ross McConnell, Jim McConnell, Chis McConnell, Sharon Willis and Jan Taylor; his grandchildren, Andrew Patrick, Allison Patrick, Ross Blake McConnell, Vince McConnell, Alex McConnell and Mitchell McConnell; his step-grandchildren, Ryan Kennedy and William Nelson; and a great-grandson, Douglas I. Greenlee.
His sister, Anne Williamson Glisson, died before him.
Burial will be March 17 at 3 p.m. in the All Saints Cemetery followed by a memorial service in the old church.
