Joe English, 90, former Tradition resident

Joseph Michael English Jr., a former Tradition Club resident, died May 17 at his home in Sandy Springs, Ga. He was 90.

He was born Aug. 1, 1934, in Oak Park, Ill., the son of Joseph Michael English and Agnes English. Joe earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Marquette University in 1956. He served two years in the Army during peacetime. 

Mr. English married Elizabeth Ann Neu  in 1961 and they built a life in Arlington Heights, Ill. He spent his career as a sales executive in the telecommunications industry. In 1977, he took the family to Moorestown, N.J., where Mr. English became a Little League umpire and a Boy Scout troop committee member. In 1982, the family moved to Fairfax Station, Va.

Mrs. English died in 1991 after decade-long battle with cancer.  Mr. English married Ann Flack in 1992. They lived in Pawleys Island for 27 years. They were active members of St. Paul’s Waccamaw United Methodist Church and enjoyed travel, golf and time spent with family.

He is survived by his children, Joseph M. English III (Lisa), Thomas English (Tammy) and Catherine Ryan (Dave); and his  grandchildren, Abigail, Isabelle, Dylan, Joseph IV, Sophia, Tyler, Ella and Jacqueline.

His sisters, Kathleen (Williams) and Rhodi (Aldworth), and his brother, Richard, died before him.

A celebration of life will be held later this year at Fairfax Memorial Park where he will be laid to rest with Betty and Ann.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Waccamaw at spwmethodist.org.
