Michael L. Schroer, 73, contractor who took on tough jobs
June 5, 2025
Michael L. Schroer of Hagley Estates died May 28 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. He was 73.
He was born Oct. 30, 1951, in Butte, Mont., the son of Charles A. and Donna L. Schroer. He moved to Georgetown from Maryland, and of all the places he lived he was most at home in Pawleys Island.
Mr. Schroer was an accomplished carpenter, builder, hunter and fisherman. He was a building contractor who specialized in tackling difficult jobs others wouldn’t. He was admired for his determination to get the job done. He owned and operated Micon Inc. until a stroke in November 2019.
He was a gifted marksman who always got his limit in a dove field, and he excelled at flounder fishing, which earned him the nickname, Capt. Flounder.
Mr. Schroer enjoyed cooking and preparing meals for family and friends. He had a special talent for cooking ducks, geese, doves, turkeys, ribs, and barbecue.
Mr. Schroer always had a story to tell and although he was unable to tell his stories after his stroke, he enjoyed hearing stories others had to tell. While he wasn’t necessarily a religious man, he was very spiritual and found comfort and peace in the beauty of nature and all it offered.
Although he had lost a part of himself, due to his stroke, he had found something, too. He was learning how to be a better boater.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Trish; his mini-dachshund, Netty; his siblings, Mark (Betsy) of Cape May, N.J., Joe of Myrtle Beach, John (Sonya) of Pawleys Island, Lee Ann of Castle Hayne, N.C., Jim (Helen) of James Island and Jean (Winfred) of Georgetown; his sister-in-law, Mary Sue of Andrews, and his brother-in-law, Darby Futon (Vickie) of Salter; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and his son from a previous marriage, David (Keely) of Cayce.
A funeral mass will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Father Pat’s Kitchen at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church at pbocchurch.com or to boater education, hunter education or youth fishing in Georgetown County at dnr.sc.gov.
