Nell Smith, 81, source of chatter and laughter

February 22, 2019

Clara Nell Smith of Pawleys Island died Feb. 16. She was 81.

She was born July 19, 1937, in Troy, N.C., the daughter of James Stanley Smith and Mary Estelle Almond Smith. Known as Nell, she grew up in Marshville, N.C., and enjoyed the small town feel of love and camaraderie with her extended family and friends, including a niece, Karen Ruff, who was a shining light in her life.

There was always a lot of chatter and laughter when she was present, her family said.  She loved playing golf and hitting the ball far. She could boat and fish and enjoy a picnic like no other.  The game of chicken foot could be played for hours with her good friends, Linda and Janette, with dinner to follow as they were all equally good cooks.

She cherished her life at Pawleys Island, where she made a host of friends, whom she left with a poem from St. Augustine:

“Love never disappears for death is a non-event.  I have merely retired to the room next door. You and I are the same; what we were for each other, we still are.  Speak to me as you always have, do not use a different tone, do not be sad. Continue to laugh at what made us laugh. Smile and think of me.  Life means what it has always meant.  The link is not severed.  Why should I be out of your soul if I am out of your sight?  I will wait for you; I am not here, but just on the other side of this path.  You see, all is well.”

She is survived by her brothers, Hildreth, Larry and Joel Smith, and two sisters, Mary Charles Edwards and Maxine Smith Nance.

Two other brothers, Warren and Bill Smith, and a sister, Carolyn McGinnis, died before her.

A service to celebrate her life will be held Feb. 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Burroughs Funeral Home in Murrells Inlet.
