August 1, 2024
Rhoda Guess Hinson, who served as a judge in the Pawleys Island Fourth of July Parade for many years, died at her home in Columbia on July 10. She was 67.
She was born Sept. 6, 1956, in Kingstree, a daughter of James Advil Guess Sr. and Rhoda Mell Brown Guess. Rhoda had a memorable childhood growing up in Lane with family and friends and those memories extended to the family beach house, the Guess House, on Pawleys Island, where the close family has gathered since 1956.
Rhoda was a 1974 graduate of Kingstree High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina with a minor in French.
She was a retired state employee.
Mrs. Hinson loved her role as a parade judge at Pawleys Island, her family said, and was recognizable by her judicial gown.
She loved genealogy, especially Williamsburg County history, and was a member of the S.C. Historical Society. She was also an avid Gamecock fan.
Mrs. Hinson was a lifelong member of Union Presbyterian Church in Salters. Her love for the Lord was apparent to all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Hannah Hayes Mims (Ryan); her grandchildren, Ryan Charles and Lydia Hayes; her sisters, Vicky Guess McDonald (Steve) and Rebecca Guess McGill (Robert) and sister-in-law, Cheryl Guess; five nieces; a nephew; and 13 great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, another sister, Catherine Guess Horton, and a brother, James Advil Guess Jr., died before her.
A celebration of her life was held July 16 at Union Presbyterian Church, where memorials may be made c/o Diane Boyd, 114 E. Brooks Street, Kingstree, SC 29556.
