Rick Myers, 86, award-winning Midway volunteer

April 24, 2025

Richard B. Myers of Pawleys Island died April 15 at his home. He was 86.

He was born June 23, 1938, in Akron, Ohio, the son of Richard and Katherine Myers. Rick was raised in Ohio and attended the College of Wooster before serving in the Coast Guard.

His career in the hospitality industry spanned more than four decades, with leadership roles in Cleveland, New Orleans and Atlanta.

He retired as vice president of sales for the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, where he was widely respected for his warm demeanor and genuine desire to help others.

He married Sharlene Payne Myers, and they raised their family in New Orleans and Roswell, Ga. A doting father, he cherished time spent boating, fishing and camping with his three children.

In retirement, Mr. Myers and his second wife, Sue, moved to Pawleys Island. He was a volunteer with Midway Fire Rescue, earning multiple commendations for his service, including being named Volunteer of the Year five years in a row after joining the department in 2002.

He later worked at Pawleys Island Supplies, where he loved connecting with locals and visitors.

He also found joy in nature’s pleasures, especially feeding and watching the many birds and animals that visited the beautiful pond and swampland just behind his home.

In addition to his wife, Marilyn Suzanne Riggle Myers, he is survived by his children, Timothy Myers (Christa) and Ashley Clark (Brandon); seven grandchildren; and his stepchildren, Mike Mushock (Lynne) and Ted Mushock, along with their families.

In addition to his first wife, another son, Bradley Boyd Myers, died before him.

A celebration of his life will be announced at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the International Association of Fire Fighters Foundation or The Nature Conservancy.

Condolences may be sent a mayerfuneralhome.com.
