May 8, 2025
Sue Hagood Overton of Georgetown died April 19 in Pawleys Island. She was 89.
She was born April 15, 1936, in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Cora Thomas Hagood of Nashville and Col. Johnson Hagood of Charleston. Sue was a self-described “Army brat” who spent much of her childhood traveling between Charleston and the various countries where her father was stationed and later worked, including the Philippines, Venezuela and Colombia. She attended Ashley Hall and graduated from Vanderbilt University. These experiences helped shape the thoughtful and engaging woman she would become, one who valued travel, learning and connection.
She met her future husband, Dolphin D. Overton III of Andrews, at a dress parade at The Citadel. Capt. Overton was a West Point graduate who became an ace Air Force fighter pilot during the Korean War. They were married for 54 years until his death in 2013.
The couple lived in Smithfield, N.C., where they raised five children. Mrs. Overton was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, as well as a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels and many other community support organizations.
She was also a successful entrepreneur, co-founding the “Raggy-O Chutney” brand of savory sauces with her dear friend, Carolyn Ragsdale. Their award-winning chutney was a staple in numerous specialty food stores and supermarkets along the East Coast and was featured at food shows far and wide.
After her husband’s death, Mrs. Overton moved to Georgetown, where she attended Prince George Winyah Parish Church. She was remembered as generous, loving and kind-hearted who was always ready with a smile and a kind word.
She is survived by her step-sister Paula Hughson; her half-brothers, Johnson Hagood and James Hagood; her children, Kathleen Overton (Martin Ferarra), Dolphin Overton IV (Michele), Jane Cobb (Robert), Charlotte York and Carolyn Morton; her grandchildren, Jo Elizabeth Bailey, Lauren Call, Dolphin Overton V, Robert Cobb Jr., Johnson Cobb, Calvin Cobb, Io Weiss, James Morton, Charlotte York and Ella York; and her great-grandchildren, Eloise Bailey, Raleigh Bailey, Nora Call, Bransom Call, Dolphin Overton VI and Oakley Overton.
A celebration of her life will be held at a future date.
