Walter H. Owens III, 65, work at Winyah power plant
September 5, 2024
Walter Hazard Owens III of Andrews died Sept. 1 at his home. He was 65.
He was born Feb. 14, 1959, in Georgetown, the son of Walter Hazard Owens Jr. and LaJean Barrineau Owens-Kinder.
Walt graduated from Andrews Academy in 1977 where he was a stand-out athlete. After graduating, he devoted over 30 years of service to Santee Cooper as a unit operator at Winyah Generating Station. He served as a mentor to many co-workers at the plant.
The simplest pleasures brought him joy, his family said. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and cooking. He was an avid Gamecock and Atlanta Braves fan.
Mr. Owens spent many years coaching his sons’ Little League teams and critiquing the meals he helped teach them to prepare.
He is survived by his wife, Melissa Morris Owens, who was his childhood sweetheart; his sons, Walter Hazard Owens IV (Stacy) of Michigan City, Ind., Todd Morris Owens (Heather) of Andrews and James Philip Owens (Kate) of Pawleys Island; his grandchildren, Jackson Owens, Isaac Brzinski, Molly Brzinski, Keegan Owens, Kinley Owens, Logan Cox, Brighton Owens, Emery Owens and Flip Owens; his brother, Joey Owens (Vicki); his sisters-in-law, Vicky Martin, Rhonda Johanning (Ernest) and Joy Fulton; and a large extended family.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Mayer-Ethridge Funeral Home Andrews Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to AMI Kids at amikids.org.
