School board narrows superintendent search to four

The finalist, from left, Giles, Hall, Sheffield and Wright.

Of the four finalists to be the next Georgetown County superintendent of schools, two are county natives, two are women, three are Black, one is a Marine Corps veteran, and one was a finalist the last time the county was looking for a superintendent.

Bethany Giles, the district’s current interim superintendent, grew up in Andrews.

Giles was a teacher and assistant principal at Rosemary Middle School, principal at Brown’s Ferry Elementary School and Carvers Bay High School, executive director of secondary schools and athletics for the district, and then deputy superintendent of academics and student services before taking over as interim superintendent July 1.

Glenda Sheffield, who grew up in Plantersville, is the chief academic officer for the Palm Beach County, Fla., school district.

Sheffield was a magnet academy teacher and coordinator; a principal at the elementary, middle and high school levels; an assistant principal at the elementary and high school levels; and a regional instructional superintendent.

William Wright, the superintendent of the Sumter School District, was also a finalist for the Georgetown job four years ago when Keith Price was hired.

Wright has been a superintendent for three districts in South Carolina and North Carolina for the last 11 years. Before that he was an assistant superintendent, and principal and assistant principal at the middle and high school levels.

Gregory Hall, who served in the Marines for eight years, is the assistant superintendent of secondary education for the Florence 1 School District.

Hall was a principal and assistant principal at the middle school level.

The district received 22 applications for the superintendent position and nine people were brought in for interviews last week.

After a short executive session during the School Board meeting on Tuesday, the four finalists were announced.

“The board is pleased to present four highly qualified candidates for this crucial leadership position,” Chairman Bill Gaskins said. “The board looks forward to the next phase in the search process.”

The district is hosting a meet and greet with the finalists on Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the district office in Georgetown.
