Search for superintendent gathers public input

A session at Waccamaw High for the last search in 2020 drew 27 people. A forum is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday for the current search.

An online survey for people to give feedback on the next Georgetown County School District superintendent garnered 167 responses in the first two days after it went live.

The district is also hosting one-hour feedback sessions next week at the county’s four high schools. The meetings will be at Andrews and Carvers Bay on Tuesday at 6 p.m., and at Waccamaw and Georgetown on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The S.C. School Boards Association, which is conducting the search for candidates, will be facilitating the sessions.

Keith Price, the current superintendent, is leaving at the end of the month to become the superintendent-elect of the Richland 1 School District.

Representatives from the association have already met with focus groups made up of students, teachers, transportation workers and school support staff. Next week there will be meetings with principals, assistant principals, district staff members and representatives from local governments,  nonprofits and businesses.

On July 11, the association will present a pool of candidates to the School Board, as well as a summary of the results from the focus groups and the online survey.

The board expects to choose the semi-finalists who will be interviewed between Aug. 12-14. Finalists will be announced on Aug. 20 and come for interviews Sept. 16-18.

School Board Chairman Bill Gaskins expects the district to host a meet-and-greet for the finalists. The next superintendent is expected to be named either Oct. 1 or 8.
