Superintendent among finalists for Midlands job

Keith Price is interviewed by students at the district tech fair last year. He wasn’t commenting last week about his potential move to Lexington One.

Georgetown County School Superintendent Keith Price is one of three finalists to be the next superintendent of the Lexington 1 School District.

Price declined to comment since the application process is ongoing. He notified the Georgetown County School Board members on March 20, the day before the names of the Lexington 1 finalists were made public.

School Board Chairman Bill Gaskins said the board would have no comment until members know whether Price is staying or going.

School Board Member Scott DuBose said the news was “a bit of a downer.”

“I think he’s been a great  asset to the Georgetown County School District,” DuBose added. “I can’t imagine he won’t get it because he’s really, as far as I’m concerned, top notch.”

DuBose thinks moving to a larger school district is a “great opportunity” for Price.

“I told him, if you get it I will be very happy for you. If you don’t get it I will be very happy for [our] school district,” DuBose said.

DuBose confirmed that Price applied for the job; Lexington 1 did not reach out to him.

Before being hired by Georgetown to replace Randy Dozier in 2020, Price worked for the Richland 2 School District for 24 years, including six as assistant superintendent. He was also a principal and assistant principal in Blythewood and Columbia.

Lexington 1 expects to name its next superintendent next month.

If Price is offered the Lexington 1 job, and accepts it, the Georgetown County School Board will likely name an interim superintendent while the search for the next superintendent begins.

School Board Member Lynne Ford declined to comment because she said it would just be “speculation.”

School Board Member Patti Hammel did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Along with Price, the other finalists in Lexington 1 are: Chris Ballenger, superintendent of Warren County Public Schools in Virginia; and Erin Slater, superintendent of the Fort Madison Community School District in Iowa.

Lexington 1 is hosting an event for the public to meet the three finalists on April 8. A final round of interviews with take place after.
