George D. Finley, 72, Vietnam veteran

George Darwin Finley of Pawleys Island, husband of Ute Lena Leibenguth Finley, died Jan. 13 at his home. He was 72.
He was born Nov. 14, 1947, in Chattaroy, W.Va., a son of Millard Curtis Finley and Ruby Marie Horn Finley. He was a graduate of Chattaroy High School and Horry-Georgetown Technical College.
George was a Vietnam veteran who served 22 years in the military, two years with the Navy and 20 with the Army. He was a door gunner and a crew chief during his enlistment. He moved to the area in 1988 from Fayetteville, N.C., and enjoyed playing cards, bowling, watching sports and coaching Little League.
He was an avid Duke basketball fan who also loved water sports, fishing and hunting.
In addition to his wife of 46 years, George is survived by his sons, Charlie Hoffman (Joanna) of Raleigh, N.C., Bryan Finley (Vicky Brazell) of Pawleys Island and Cory Lee Finley (Jamie) of Georgetown; his grandchildren, Triston Finley, Parker Finley, Blake Finley, Isabella Finley and Luke Finley; six sisters, Judy Defoe (George) of Williamson, W.Va., Nancy Lawley (Jimmy) of Montevallo, Ala., Phyllis Elliott (Greg) of Bristol, Va., Rita Finley Allen of Marvel Ala., Sue Ella Finley (Jerry) of Graysville Ala., and Virginia Finley of Marvel; three brothers, Donald Finley (Barbara) of Delbarton, W.Va., C.W. Finley (Betty) of Borderland, W.Va., and Freddie Joe Finley of Marvel; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, two brothers, Millard Finley Jr. and James Kenneth Finley, and a sister, Kathy Figart, died before him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Graham Funeral Home Chapel.
